Chandler Stephenson Will Spend His Day With The Cup In Humboldt

NBC Sports - The Stanley Cup will travel with each Capital player this summer making stops around the world along the way, but few stops will be as meaningful as the one it will take with Chandler Stephenson.

Stephenson, a native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, intends to spend his day with the Stanley Cup in Humboldt, Saskatchewan.

The hockey world was stunned in April with news of a devastating bus crash involving the junior hockey team Humboldt Broncos. A total of 16 people were killed and 13 injured when a truck crashed into the bus carrying the team.

Saskatoon is only about 90 minutes away from Humboldt and Stephenson felt a personal connection to the tragedy.

“I knew a couple of guys on the bus,” Stephenson told reporters after Thursday’s game.

For a tragedy that was felt across the hockey community, it seems fitting that as part of the healing process the Stanley Cup be brought to Humboldt for the victims and their families to enjoy.

Said Stephenson, “When the day comes and the people and family and friends there, it’s going to be special.”

First of all, that picture of Stephenson with the Cup is incredible. Awesome, awesome picture.

But more importantly, Stephenson is going to use his one day with the Cup this Summer and take it to Humboldt. What an incredibly thoughtful guy. He could rent a yacht, bring 20 of his buddies and 30 smokeshows out into the ocean and have a wild ass day, but instead he’s going to help heal a community that was broken by tragedy. The families and friends of the Broncos who were involved in that crash will get to join Stephenson with the Cup, take pictures with it, and talk to the Saskatchewan native about hockey and life. The selflessness he’s showing is top notch. I already loved him for his play on the ice, and now I love him for who he is off of it. The more this Summer goes on, the more we are seeing just how wonderful this entire Caps team really is.
