The Best Movies From Each State: Arkansas

Movie States in line

The results from the fourth installment of my totally normal and not insane 51 week study of the top three movies from each state are IN. Remember everyone got three votes, so the percentages reflect how many times they appeared on every individual vote. For the Natural State, this is what y’all chose.

3. Mud

An underrated and extremely well made coming-of-age movie with a ton of southern influence, I figured this as a lock to place. It’s one of my favorite McConaughey roles ever, which is huge praise, and it was also Tye Sheridan’s (Ready Player One) breakout role. Reese Witherspoon (Legally Blonde), Sam Shepard (Black Hawk Down), Sarah Paulson (Oceans 8), Paul Sparks (Boardwalk Empire) and Michael Shannon (The Shape of Water) also played some gritty characters you couldn’t get enough of.

2. True Grit (2010)

While I love the movie, this was certainly a bit of a shocker to see it place. The cast was stellar, with Jeff Bridges (The Big Lebowski), Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting), Hailee Steinfeld (Music and stuff) and Josh Brolin (No Country For Old Men) all giving outstanding performances. Hell, Domhnall Gleeson (Star Wars The Last Jedi) was even in it with a bit role. The Coen Brothers did a great job in this remake, and it is a must-see for anyone who likes newer revisionist westerns.

1. Walk The Line

A phenomenal film about one of the best musical artists of all time, Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon proved to be an incredible combo. Besides the actual style and storytelling being impressive, what really blew me away was that both Phoenix and Witherspoon sang all the songs themselves and weren’t dubbed over. That effort paid off, making ‘Walk the Line’ one of the best biographical dramas ever made.

Here is the breakdown:

The vote went more or less how I expected, although I did expect ‘American Made’ to be a little higher on the list. That movie flew under the radar, but it was very fun and is also currently streaming on HBO GO. Well, we’re done with that dry state. On to a HUGE poll, the Golden State herself, California. Since there is an outrageous amount of movies to pick from, I upped the pool to 20 choices automated from Google. I’ll be honest, I have NO idea how this is going to go. I’d imagine ‘Pulp Fiction’, ‘Training Day’ and ‘The Big Lebowski’ all make it in the top 5, but that’s really up to you guys.
