If Anyone’s Going To Bring Rock N' Roll Back From The Dead, It’s Greta Van Fleet

One year ago today, I blogged about a little band called Greta Van Fleet for the very first time. And they were – well, they were quite literally – a “little” band. They were hovering around nine, maybe ten thousand followers on their social platforms, had only released four tracks to their name, and had done so little press/media that it was nearly impossible to figure out pretty basic details about the boys in the group, leading many (including me) to spread a bizarre rumor that they were in high school…

Now, I don’t want to say at that point that Greta Van Fleet was moreso viewed as a “gimmick” than anything else, because it was pretty clear from the get-go that these were some incredibly talented musicians we had on our hands, but there was a whole lotta Led Zeppelin talk up front (as evident by my headline there).

Singer Josh Kiszka’s voice was, and still is, the main driving factor in folk making these comparisons, as he sounds pretty damn similarly to ‘Zep’ frontman Robert Plant – and well, most people struggle to do an eighth of what Plant could do with his voice, so Kiszka being able to do almost all of what he could do made him get practically viewed as the second coming of Christ when these dudes were first turning heads.

Immediately, there was backlash from angry old dudes claiming they were just “ripping off” Zeppelin, calling the throwback band a “cheap imitation” and things of that nature, but the band threw on their horse-blinders – as Jimmy Iovine would say – and persisted. They added four more tunes to their discography on “From The Fires”, a universally praised 8-track EP, and tomorrow, they release their first full length album: “Anthem of a Peaceful Army”.

Already, there’s been five singles – ‘When The Curtain Falls’, ‘Watching Over’, ‘Lover, Leaver (Taker, Believer)’, ‘Anthem’, and ‘You’re The One’ – which as a whole I’d proabably consider to be the band’s best material ever, and last night, from the clouds, a TWENTY-SIX MINUTE live version of ‘Lover, Leaver (Taker, Believer)’ was dropped on YouTube (found above) which – in my mind – solidified Greta Van Fleet as the captain of the team that’s going to bring rock n’ roll back from the grave. They truly have it all. The look, the musical ability, the vibes, the frontman, the songwriting, the mindset, the ability to jam like they do…

We’re looking at the best rock n’ roll band to surface on a semi-mainstream level in well over a decade here, folks, and I couldn’t be more excited to be on this ride with them as a fan.

Below are all of the singles released thus far from “Anthem of a Peaceful Army”, which will be available everywhere music is sold tonight at midnight.
