The Trailer For "Free Solo" About Alex Honnold's Climb Of El Cap Is Riveting

“Does it feel different, to be up there, without a rope?”

I mean, if that line doesn’t hook, I don’t know what to tell ya. As everyone knows, I’m a bit of an extreme athlete myself, as I’ve watched multiple climbing documentaries and blogged about climbing many times. For a refresher, I suggest this blog about Alex Honnold’s record setting climb up El Cap. Basically he did one of the hardest climbs to do…and did it without ropes. Aka people have a hard time doing that climb when roped in, he did it with just chalk and nothing to stop him from falling to his death if he as much as sneezed.

From the original Nat Geo article about it:

The route Honnold chose to reach the top of El Capitan, known as Freerider, is one of the most prized big wall climbs in Yosemite. The route has 30 sections—or pitches—and is so difficult that even in the last few years, it was newsworthy when a climber was able to summit using ropes for safety.

And they filmed the entire thing, making it into a documentary that will be in theaters in the fall. Listening to Jimmy Chin talk about how he wasn’t sure he wanted to make the film because you never know when your friend will fall to his death gave me the sweats.

I absolutely cannot wait to see it. If you watched my 2016 Documentary of the Year “Meru” or my 2017 Documentary of the Year “Valley Uprising” then you will be very excited about “Free Solo”. I highly recommend both docs, you will not be disappointed.
